About Kune Kune Pigs
KuneKune pigs are small, intelligent pigs that come
from New Zealand. They were traditionally raised by
Maori tribes for their tasty meat and as they were
allowed to roam free around villages they have
adapted a strong bond with humans and an excellent
temperament.
Whilst KuneKune pigs are not suitable as a traditional
household pet, their affectionate manner and distinct
appearance make them a lovable addition to any farm
or smallholding. They are sociable animals and hate
living alone, but a pair would live happily in a small
paddock or even a large enclosed garden.
At our coastal farm near St Davids in Pembrokeshire
we have two pet breeding sows, Pepper and Penny. We
are not commercial breeders, we keep the pigs as a
hobby and love having piglets as a way of spreading
the joy of owning a KuneKune.
While we also own hens, ducks, pygmy goats and
dexter cattle, it's the pigs that give us the most
enjoyment due to their distinctive personalities.
Our KuneKune are easy to keep, living together
in a small pig arc in a paddock about an acre in
size. As well as grazing, we feed them with a small
amount of pig food depending on the season. They
are exceptionally clean, affectionate animals and
are happy to trot over to us for a cuddle and scratch
whenever we enter their field.
Another benefit of keeping KuneKune pigs is that unlike
traditional commercial pig breeds, they generally
tend not to churn up and root at the ground, so our
fields still look lush and grassy after a year's grazing.
Both of our pigs are registered with the British Kune
Kune Society, who provide an extensive guide to buying
and keeping the pigs on their website...
